History

Uxbridge, Ontario, has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1806. Originally inhabited by the Indigenous peoples of the Huron-Wendat and Mississauga tribes, the area attracted European settlers who recognized its potential for agriculture and industry. The first settlers in the area were Quakers who started arriving in 1806 from the Catawissa area of Pennsylvania. The town grew steadily with the arrival of mills along the local streams, which powered the production of lumber, flour, and wool. Uxbridge became a vital transportation hub in the mid-19th century with the construction of the Toronto & Nipissing Railway and Uxbridge's first train station, connecting it to the expanding urban centres of Toronto and beyond. Throughout its history, Uxbridge has preserved its heritage through the restoration of historical buildings and the establishment of the Uxbridge Historical Centre, which celebrates the town's pioneer roots.
