Robert H. Perry Residence

Robert H. Perry Residence – 2022

According to Uxbridge – Scugog Historic Homes and Heritage Buildings, this fieldstone home (the only one built within the town limits) was built by Robert Perry after he purchased the lot from G.H. Thompson in 1920.  Mr. Thompson operated a blacksmith shop on the property after he purchased it in 1904.

Robert Perry was the manager of the Gold Metal Furniture Company.  The factory which was located behind the old co-op at the corner of Brock Street and Victoria Drive, which was destroyed by fire in 1944.   Read about the Gold Metal Furniture Company

It is believed that the stone for the Robert H. Perry Residence was brought to town by rail and then delivered to the site by horse and wagon.   The home features clear oak trim, floors, stairs and doors (including French doors and sliding doors).  Some of the original features can still be found including some light fixtures, the door bell, a stained glass window and the oak front door.   A couple of other interesting features still in the home are parts of the water system which was located in the attic and a cistern located under the back deck.

To honour his Irish decent Mr. Perry had a form of a shamrock placed in the stone wall facing Planks Lane.   If you look closely at this wall you can also see the form of a person just below the shamrock.

The home has had very few owners since it was constructed by Mr Perry.  The Perrys sold it to Gordon and Amanda McLean in 1923 who lived in the house until they sold it to its current owners in 1961.

The Charles Gould Residence was originally a farm property, it was owned by Joseph Gould and was inherited by his son Charles in 1886.   Charles and his brother Harvey ran the Gould Brothers Bank and the Gould Flour and Feed Store on Brock Street as well as the Uxbridge Roller Mills.   While running many businesses in town he was also elected Reeve in 1884.

The farm was sold on 1914.  A few years later Charles suffered a stroke and passed away on December 18, 1922.

The above photo is taken from the north east side of the property in 2021. Today the home is surrounded by a hedge making the property very secluded.

Neat Facts

The house has an unusual coffin door, which opens onto the front verandah and allowed a coffin to be carried in and out of the house. It was a common practice years ago to have funerals and wakes in the home.    It was constructed of yellow bricks similar to the Uxbridge Library (Joseph Gould Institute)

The sod was turned in May 1955 and equipment started construction on the new Hospital in October of the same year.

After lack of funds and many delays the hospital finally opened on January 12th 1959.  The hospital has undergone renovations with additions in 1967 and 1996 – 1998.

In April 1997,  the hospital was amalgamated with Community Memorial Hospital Port Perry to form the North Durham Health Services. NDHS ceased to exist in 1998. Uxbridge Cottage Hospital was affiliated with Lakeridge Health Centre in Oshawa, and was known as Lakeridge Health, Uxbridge, from 1998 until January 5, 2004.  In January 2004 the hospital was welcomed under the jurisdiction of the Markham-Stoufville Hospital Corporation.  – Source Wikipedia

Hospital Redevelopment

In September 2019 Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Peter Bethlenfalvy, President of the Treasury Board and MPP for Pickering-Uxbridge announced that Ontario would invest to support Markham Stouffville Hospital for the proposed redevelopment of the Uxbridge site.  In April 2022 the provincial government approved to build the new hospital on the existing grounds.

The new state-of-the-art building will be constructed on existing land beside the current hospital and will connect to the new Uxbridge Health Centre.  Plans are also underway for a a long-term care home that will also connect to the hospital.  The new Uxbridge campus will be a community health hub that will include acute, ambulatory and emergency services, long term care, and primary care services.

Samuel S. Sharpe Home

Samuel S. Sharpe Home

Circa 1877

Samuel S. Sharpe Home

The home was originally built with a taller tower on the north side.

The following is taken from the Township of Uxbridge – Heritage Register

The Samuel S. Sharpe Home was “Initially built on a parcel of land circa 1877 by a local builder and known in the community as the “Mauder Mansion”, the building was originally purchased by the Sharpe family in 1881, and later owned by Uxbridge native Col. Samuel Sharpe in 1907. Col. Samuel Sharpe is one of Uxbridge’s most prominent public figures, having served as a Member of Parliament and distinguished service in the Canadian Military, having served overseas in Europe during WWI. The building remained in the Sharpe family until the passing of Col. Samuel Sharpe’s wife 1943, who was also a prominent public figure of Uxbridge within her own rights.”

Samuel S. Sharpe Home

This photo shows the Sam Sharpe House as it appeared in 2021

The home was originally built with a taller tower on the north side.   It is believed the top floor of the tower was either removed or destroyed by fire sometime after Sharpe’s death in May 1918.

During the time the Sharpe’s owned the home the verandah and the conservatory on the south side were added to the home.  Unfortunately the conservatory was destroyed in 2022 by a tornado.

This picture from “Uxbridge The Good Old Days” is what the business looked like in 1975 before moving from downtown.

In 1947 Alex Williamson purchased the Imperial Oil station located at the corner or Brock Street East and Main Street and opened his Chevrolet-Oldsmobile dealership.  Williamson was located at this corner for more than 30 years.  To make room for his growing business Williamson moved his dealership south of downtown along highway 47.   To serve the Uxbridge and surrounding areas they operated 2 locations.  The Chevrolet-Oldsmobile at 259 Toronto Street South and the Pontiac-Buick-GMC at Douglas Road.   In 2010 the franchise agreements for Pontiac dealers expired.   Williamson closed the Douglas Road location and moved their Buick and GMC sales to the Toronto St location.

Williamson now serves Uxbridge out of 3 locations.

Brownscombe Residence “Gleeholme” – Southwestern view of Gleeholme taken in the early 1900’s after the verandah was added.

Gleeholme was built somewhere between 1884 – 1901 by Charles W. Small.  Mr Small was the owner of the Uxbridge Piano and Organ Company which was located just north of this home.  It is believed that most of the material for the interior woodwork of the home came from his piano company.

In 1905 Mr Small sold the home to his daughter Mary Lapp and her husband.  Two years later the home was sold to J. Fletcher and Emma Eliza Brownscombe who owned a large general merchandise store in town.  Around 1908 was when the Brownscombes added the wrap around verandah.  Except for a short time the home remained in the Brownscombe name until the late 20th century.

The origin of the name “Gleeholme” is unknown.

43 Brock Street West, Uxbridge

In the late 1960’s Homan’s department store opened at this location.

Every long time resident of Uxbridge will remember when 43 Brock St W was at it’s glory.

In the late 1960’s Homan’s department store opened at this location.  I’m sure I am not the only one who remembers going shopping at Homan’s for their back to school clothing.  The building later became home to (famous to Uxbridge) Ballinger’s Better Buy.   Ballinger’s at the time was the local version of BiWay meets the present day dollar store.   The building was later home to La Petite Fleur florists.

The building was constructed on the site of the former Uxbridge Fire Department, which at the time had become an eyesore in the downtown.

It is ironic that this building, once a busy part of our downtown has been vacant for many years and has once again become an eyesore.

A.H. Badgerow Residence

A.H. Badgerow Residence

According to the Historic Homes and Heritage Buildings the earliest recorded owner of the property at the corner or Brock Street East and First Avenue was Wm T. Mason.  In 1882 Mr. Mason sold the property to a veterinarian named A.H Badgerow.  There was an old railway-house on the property which A.H Badgerow tore down to build the house we see here today.

Mr. Badgerow had a successful veterinarian practice but in 1887 he sold it to W.M Plank and his home to John R. Dales.

John P. Plank Residence – 1874

John P. Plank Residence was built in 1874 by John P. Plank who was one of the early founders of Uxbridge.

He came to Uxbridge in 1826 and built the first Inn and Tavern in town.   Later in 1828 he built a saw mill at Elgin Pond and the first store in town.   The saw mill he later sold to Joseph Gould.  In the 1840’s he built an Inn just north of the present day Music Hall.  The Inn was the first brick building built in Uxbridge.  He also owned 200 acres east of Main Street and in the 1850’s subdivided it and started selling the lots.

In the 1870’s he built the Plank House on the southwest corner of Brock and Main Streets.   (See an earlier post https://www.shanecoxworth.com/BrockStreetUxbridge.)   The building was later destroyed by fire.

In 1873 and entire block of buildings between Marietta St and Brock St were destroyed by fire, including J.P. Planks original house, which was once considered one of the finest in Uxbridge.  Following the fire the house we see today was built.

J.P. Plank died in 1876 with his wife passing away a year later.   The house remained in the Plank name until it was sold in 1934 to Hartley Vyvyan.  It was then again sold to Anson T. Button Jr in 1936, who was the grandson of J.P. Plank.

Anson T. Button Jr divided the house into apartments and lived in the home until his death in 1969.

The house is now owned by the Low family.   A large addition was added and the building is now the Low and Low Funeral Home.
